What are the AI Overviews (SGE)?

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries of topics that include links to resources supporting the information in the snapshot , making it quicker and easier for users to access relevant information.

Unlike Featured Snippets, which provide brief answers from a single webpage to address a specific query, AI Overviews combine information from multiple sources to deliver a more comprehensive summary.

How do you track the AI Overviews using Advanced Web Ranking?

In Advanced Web Ranking, you can monitor the appearance of AI Overviews in non-personalized search results on Google Desktop Universal and Google Mobile Universal search engines.

To start tracking these Google search engines, go to Project Settings > Search Engines and add them to your project.

When monitoring a Universal search engine, the positions of Organic entries alongside the URLs from AI Overviews,Aggregator Units, Local 3-pack, Featured Snippets, People Also Ask, Images, and other types of results will be reported as ranking if found in the SERPs retrieved from Google. More information on Google's search preferences available in AWR can be found in this article here.

How are the AI Overviews reported in AWR?

When found in the SERPs retrieved from Google, the websites included in AI Overview results are reported on the same ranking position because they belong to the the same search result element.

How can you identify the keywords that trigger AI Overviews in AWR?

You can use the SERP Features filter in the Ranking > Keywords report to pinpoint the keywords that triggered AIO results and track their performance effectively.

The SERP Features column shows the types of search results that appear on Google for each keyword, making it easy to spot AI Overviews and other SERP features.

If the selected website (main or competitor’s URL) ranks within a specific SERP feature, its corresponding icon will be highlighted in green. If the website doesn’t appear in any of the features on the SERP, all icons will remain blue.

How can your website get featured in AI Overviews?

You can't directly control AI Overview rankings, as Google dynamically generates them, meaning the content and sources can vary significantly between searches. However, you can improve your chances of being featured by following these tips:

  • Create high-quality, authoritative content

Google prioritizes reliable, trustworthy content to ensure users quickly find credible answers to their questions. Since AI Overviews extend this approach, crafting authoritative content can improve your chances of being included.

  • Include answer-focused sections

AI Overviews are designed to deliver clear, concise information. Structuring your content to directly address specific questions—especially in the opening sentences—can make it more likely to be selected. This approach is similar to optimizing for Featured Snippets.

  • Align with search intent

AI-generated results are tailored to meet user needs efficiently. To increase your chances of being featured, create content and target keywords that align with their search intent. Additionally, you should consider targeting informational keywords instead of transactional ones as they are more likely to trigger AIOs results.

  • Use natural language

Write the content using a straightforward, easy-to-understand language. Aim for high readability to make your content clear and digestible, which aligns with the goals of AI Overviews.
