The Pixel Position Trend allows you to track how your keywords' visual positions on the SERPs have changed over time. Understanding these pixel shifts - whether a keyword moves Above the Fold (ATF) or Below the Fold (BTF) - helps you correlate ranking positions with actual SERP visibility, enabling more data-driven decisions when optimizing your search engine rankings.

For instance, you can use the Pixel Position metric to:

  • Detect when keywords fall Below the Fold, which might lead to reduced SERP visibility despite maintaining high-ranking positions.

  • Understand how changes in pixel position impact your CTR, impressions, and traffic. Your keywords might still rank high, but if they are positioned further down the page due to pixel shifts, their performance can be negatively affected.

  • Keep track of historical pixel positions to identify patterns and trends, helping you stay proactive in your SEO strategy.

What is Pixel Position?

The Pixel Position is calculated based on the top 10 results appearing on Google SERPs for each keyword. It measures the vertical distance from the top of the SERP to each ranking URL. A lower pixel count indicates a higher ranking, placing the URL closer to the top of the search results page - a positive outcome in SEO terms.

How to access Pixel Position Trends?

Start by adding Pixel Position as an additional table column using the Table Settings manager within the Ranking > Keywords section of AWR. This step is essential for visualizing how keywords perform in search results based on their pixel position.

Next, hover over the values displayed for each keyword in the newly added column to access the Pixel Position Trend in time. The Pixel Position Trend chart appears as a tooltip, showing the keyword's position on the SERP over the selected time interval.

It highlights the keyword's location relative to the top of the SERP and the fold line, differentiating between Above the Fold (ATF) and Below the Fold (BTF) placements with green and orange bars.

Furthermore, you can use the advanced filtering options available to refine your analysis:

1. Pixel Position

Filter keywords based on their pixel count with three options:

  • Above the Fold (ATF): Keywords with URLs placed at the top of the first SERP page, immediately visible without scrolling.

  • Below the Fold (BTF): Keywords with URLs positioned in the non-visible part of the first SERP page, requiring scrolling to be seen.

  • Out of Display (OOD): Keywords with URLs located beyond the visible area of the first SERP page, accessible only by navigating to subsequent pages.

2. Pixel Position Changes

Filter keywords based on the pixel position shifts recorded within the ATF, BTF, or OOD range with the following options:

  • New in Display: Keywords that gained a pixel position on the first SERP page.

  • Dropped from Display: Keywords that no longer have a pixel position on the first SERP page.

  • Improved to ATF: Keywords whose pixel position shifted from BTF to ATF.

  • Declined to BTF: Keywords whose pixel position changed from ATF to BTF.

  • Not Changed: Keywords whose pixel position remained consistent across the two selected updates.
